Steelyard Salutes: Women in Design
As we come to the end of Women's History Month, we'd like to recognize just a few of the fabulous women with whom we have the privilege of working. As innovators, these women think outside the proverbial design box to create beautiful products that find their ways into your clients' homes.
Chandi was conceived in 1997 when owner and designer, Meredith Clark, found a box of antique crystals at an LA flea market. Even as Meredith completed the requirements for medical school, her appreciation for vintage lighting and her interest in the properties of crystal became her passion. She soon focused on Chandi alone, inspired by bringing the beauty of old European lighting design to a broader market and channeling her beliefs in non-traditional healing into her creations.
For more than 20 years, Kim Vance built a career as a marketing consultant and executive building the brands of companies ranging from Fortune 500s to startups. The daughter of interior design retailers, Kim experienced the power of color in design from a young age watching the bold palettes of fabrics, wallpaper, and window coverings transform both residential and corporate spaces. Now, her colorful collection of sinks from Whyte & Co. is determined to change the conversation in designing in color with plumbing fixtures.
In the fall of 2010, three friends gathered to discuss a shared vision for an entrepreneurial enterprise dedicated to building hope in the hearts of individuals, families and communities through marketplace opportunities. This vision of hope quickly became the foundation for the formation of DIRA. Each partner has traveled extensively which has afforded them the opportunity to visit and serve in some of the poorest communities throughout the world. Each has observed the dire conditions that many endure every day, and together, they formed DIRA with the primary purpose of identifying and distributing unique, beautifully designed, handcrafted products that have the potential to provide a steady income through which these communities might improve their conditions.
